My name is Nilka, and I’d like to welcome you to Nilka Nutrition.
I am a Venezuelan Medical Doctor and a Canadian Certified Holistic Nutrition Practitioner. As part of my background, I also have a Master of Science in Epidemiology, a Teaching Diploma, and long-standing experience as a Research Associate in Endocrinology.
An Eye-Opener Experience
I moved to Canada in 2012, but it wasn’t until 2014 when my passion for the science of nutrition ignited. That year, the wellbeing of one of my loved ones was impacted. Being a Western-trained-allopathic practitioner, we tried the Western pharmacological approach – and it didn’t work. So, I began to look for alternative approaches, and the more I learned about non-pharmacological strategies, I was hooked.
My Transition To Holistic Nutrition
When I began learning about the power of holistic nutrition as either a stand-alone or adjunctive therapy for a vast number of health conditions, I was floored. I had not learned anything about this at medical school. But I was intrigued and very excited to know more.
During my search for alternative treatments for my loved one, I became more self-aware of the impact my lifestyle choices, including nutrition, exercise, and stress management, were having on my wellbeing. I connected these lifestyle choices and the way I look outside – and feel on the inside.
The concept of achieving “optimal health” really resonated with me. This was different from what I was taught in medical school, which focused on achieving just “good health” – being free of major disease. The idea of working to discover and address the root causes of symptoms rather than simply medicating the symptoms themselves fascinated me.
Because Change Starts At Home…
This is how I started looking at my own health story. All my life, I had suffered from premenstrual syndrome. Terrible abdominal cramps, bloating, breast tenderness, acne flares, food cravings accompanied me throughout my teens and most of my adulthood years. I was convinced that this was a regular part of women’s lives and that I only needed a “magic pill” to free me up from this hell of pain.
As I approached my forties and the haul of responsibilities and stress increased, my menstrual cycles switched to worse. Heavy flow, spotting, shorter cycles, mood swings, fatigue added up to the list. Up to this point, I had only tried the conventional pharmacological approach, and no need to say this wasn’t working either.
All these together served as an engine to push me in the search for formal studies. Here is when I enrolled at the Canadian School of Natural Nutrition and became Certified in Holistic Nutrition so I could attain the optimal health I was craving for and work with other women to empower them to achieve their best health by tackling the underlying causes of their concerns.
